Ultrasound
What is
an Ultrasound?
Ultrasound uses high frequency
sound waves, between 2.5 and 12
megahertz, to “bounce” off
internal organs and reflect back
to the machine. A computer then
takes that information and
creates a picture with it.
MedWise’s ultrasound machine
produces images rapidly and
without the use of radiation.
Ultrasound
may be used to evaluate blood
flow and plaque in blood
vessels. We can also use it to
perform non-surgical breast
biopsies on a cost-effective
outpatient basis. (See
also,
breast ultrasound.)
MedWise’s
top-of-the-line ultrasound
machine offers a superior image
quality, particularly in smaller
area scanning, such as breasts
and thyroid glands.
What do
I need to do to prepare for an
ultrasound?
That depends on what
area of the body is being
tested.
-
For
your head, chest, arms, legs
and feet, there is no
preparation.
-
For
your upper abdomen, you will
need to fast from both food
and drink for 8 hours.
-
For
the pelvic area, you will
need to arrive with a full
bladder. You cannot void
before the examination.
What
will the ultrasound be like?
Once you’ve arrived at
MedWise, you may be asked to
change into a hospital gown
depending on the area of the
body being tested. The test
itself is painless.
What
happens after the ultrasound?
There is no recovery
period. You can immediately
resume normal activities and a
normal diet.
What is
a
Breast Ultrasound?
Breast ultrasound is used to
diagnose breast disease or
abnormalities. As with
ultrasound, high frequency sound
waves, between 2.5 and 12
megahertz “bounce” off a
specific area of the breast
where a problem is suspected.
The waves reflect back to the
machine, and a computer then
takes that information and
creates a picture with it.

quality, particularly in smaller
area scanning, such as breasts

What do
I need to do to prepare for a
breast ultrasound?
There is no special
preparation required for a
breast ultrasound.
What
will the breast ultrasound be
like?
Once you’ve arrived at
MedWise, you may be asked to
change into a hospital gown. The
test itself is painless. A
special gel is applied to the
area, and a small transducer is
placed against the skin. The
images display on a computer
screen.
What
happens after the test is done?
There is no recovery
period. You can immediately
resume normal activities and a
normal diet.
